Video footage from 2009 of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's ballet created for Sadler's Wells on the occasion of the centenary of the Les Ballets Russes. It features dancers James O'Hara (the faun) and Daisy Phillips (the nymph). We see the choreographer's contemporary vision of Stéphane Mallarmé's poem "L'Après-midi d'un faune", Debussy's music, and Nijinsky's original choreography. Cherkaoui wasn't trying to imitate Nijinsky's dance of 1909 or recreate the scandal of the masturbation gesture he choreographed for himself which turned so many French eyes at its premiere.
(additional music was composed by Nitin Sawhney and costumes designed by Hussein Chalayan.)
